Tan Sri Datuk (Dr.) Rafiah binti Salim is our Independent Non-Executive Director. She was appointed to the Board on 31 March 2017.
Tan Sri Datuk (Dr.) Rafiah binti Salim is a notable figure in the Malaysian financial regulatory
sector with significant local and international exposure in the areas of legal, human capital, risk
and internal controls, governance and corporate finance.
A qualified lawyer, she began her career in 1974 as an Associate Professor at the Faculty of
Law, UM, where she lectured on the Law of Contract, Company and Commercial Law, Evidence
and Family Law.
Tan Sri Datuk (Dr.) Rafiah obtained her CLP in 1980 and was admitted as an Advocate and
Solicitor of the High Court of Malaya in the same year. In 1988, she entered the corporate arena,
moving from her position as Dean of the Law Faculty, UM, to join Malayan Banking Berhad as
Head of the Legal Department. She was promoted to General Manager of the Human Resource
Department in 1991. Between 1995 and 1997, she was Assistant Governor for the Security
Department, Legal Department and Property and Service Department at Bank Negara Malaysia.
She gained substantial international experience when she joined the United Nations, New
York, as Assistant Secretary General for the office of Human Resource Management from 1997
to 2002. Between 2003 and 2005, she was Executive Director of the International Centre for
Leadership in Finance ("lclif"). Since 2003, she was appointed as pro-chancellor of Universiti
Kebangsaan Malaysia. She was then appointed Vice-Chancellor/President of UM, where she
served until 2006.
